Philadelphia`s KYW-TV Deploys Front Porch DIVArchive to Manage Content in All New HD Facility
DMN Newswire--2008-3-4--Front Porch Digital today announced that KYW-TV in Philadelphia has deployed the company?s DIVArchive? for HD content storage management, and DIVAdirector? for fast, easy retrieval of clips from desktop editing workstations. The installation is part of a new all-HD facility for the duopoly of CBS 3 and the CW Philly 57.

?KYW-TV has always had a reputation for being in the vanguard of technology, so I was pleased to participate in the build of the HD station,? said Rich Paleski, director of operations and engineering. ?Because we were building an all new facility, we had the chance to do things right, abandon the old SD model of workflow and storage in favor of a model that would accommodate the information density of HD and grow with us. For content storage management, the clear and proven choice was Front Porch Digital.?

KYW-TV?s new 120,000-square-foot facility includes two television studios, each with its own control room to allow for simultaneous broadcasts, a state-of-the-art master control room, an operations center receiving hundreds of satellite feeds each day, and a sixth-floor weather deck for live outdoor weather reports.

The news operation is completely tapeless and high definition both in-studio and in the field. Essentially, what is on the air fulltime is an all HD plant with only HD streams, but to accommodate the current realities of transmission, KYW downconverts two streams for SD broadcast, one for each of the two channels, CBS and the CW.

DIVArchive works seamlessly with the station?s news editing and software systems. Because the archive is based on digital tape, an estimated two years of newsworthy content can be stored in only about two racks. DIVArchive is based on modular architecture, designed to grow as the archive does ? with no disruption to the system.

?KYW-TV is a great example of a local station with a local news operation recognizing the benefits of content storage management,? said Mike Knaisch, president and CEO of Front Porch Digital. ?KYW is in a major market, but because DIVArchive is scalable, its benefits are just as significant in a smaller operation seeking efficiency in HD storage and workflow.?
